We cant keep expecting building owners and designers to install sprinklers and then not offer any variation to existing  traditional prescriptive standards. IMO we need to have the courage of our convictions and measure the benefits offered by sprinklers and re-evaluate our requirements elsewhere in the light of these benefits.

Bring on BS 9999 and all the design freedoms it offers....its the way forward...the future!!

BS 9999 the future of design freedoms?????

ADB - Code
BS - codes
BS 7974 Code
BS 5588 code
BS 9999 code.

Where is the true engineering, the 'design freedoms' its just another code to comply with.

Indeed. I can see it being applied much more prescriptively as well, since the allowance for risk is already inherent in the document.

BS7974 is quite different to the others listed though.

We've had almost absolute design freedom for years. Building regs and fire safety contain no prescriptive requirements. A person can do whatever they like if they have the wit and imagination (and the time) to justify it.
