Fire shutters

Shutters are being fitted to bars (as in public bars - not iron) to close in the event of activation of local fire detection, most likely these will be fabric, dropping on alarm.

Is there a BS regarding activation etc... i would have thought these would have similar requirements to fire doors (dreaded 7273-4) ?

I also recall something about requirements for a delay and local alarm warning when the shutter is about to drop?

Closing over an escape route or an opening/hatch/counter David ?

David, yes, my understsnding is that they are included in our 'favourite' BS

Also includes the fire shutters commonly now installed in the opening between the servery and the dining areas of elderly persons homes and community centres etc. etc.

You can apply BS 7273-4 to interface with shutters, but no need to dread BS 7273-4; its really cool.

.... yes Nearly... they are to close off the servery area on top of the bar... ie. in front of the hand pumps segregating rear of bar from the public side...

Am wondering why they have to be fire rated shutters?

I have no idea... I believe this has come from westminster council and agreed by the FRS...  this building (and hundreds more like it) have been operating for donkeys years and there are L1 systems installed... so i have to say I don't really understand it myself.

I'm sure you don't really care either David as long as you get paid?

That's harsh....!   

We've been looking after these clients for about seven years, the building has stood for the best part of a century.... i just don't see why the place suddenly requires fire shutters.

But if anyone's going to do it and get paid I don't see why it isn't us...!!!!
