Thatch Fire Prevention
« on: July 05, 2009, 06:51:00 PM »
Having carried out a search of all material giving advice on the prevention of fire spread in thatched properties, I have found that all link back to government supported research carried out by a team lead by Marjorie Sanders in the 1990s.  This research pointed to the fact that 90% of thatch fires started as a result of heat transfer from the chimney brickwork.  This research significantly changed the perception of fire prevention in thatched properties at the time.

The research was thorough and included results of fire tests and measurement of heat transfer, and appears to remain the foundation for advice given by most fire and rescue services today.  It is also on the basis of this work that Thatch Guard detection systems have become available.

Whilst undergoing a process of reviewing all fire prevention advice and seeking to be as up-to-date as possible, I am keen to know if anyone is aware of further studies in this area carried out by an independant reputable body.

Thank you for your help.
