Hope in hell's chance
« on: June 16, 2010, 07:30:40 PM »
I am a fire risk assessor by trade, I would like to view a fire risk assessment for a hospital,
or do assessors apply their own template for office, shops and hospital premises?
regards

There is a preferred (Exemplar??) template in the HTM. Though it baffles me because it slices the job into little bits and never puts them back together again.  So to me it never gives the full perspective.

Hey but as as risk assessor dont tell them they have it wrong. The Health Service seems to have more than its fair share  of managers who cannot and will not accept the truth when it is told. Thats why they like to do it all in house and employ their own people, then they can tell them what to write.

We created a new template based around HTM for hospitals although on some parts of their estate standard templates for office and HMO would suffice.

It's a world of it's own and not something that easy to jump into and do properly if you've never done it before. I've been involved in a Trust wide project and it's really an eye opener.

There are lots of differences between the sectors and you need to do a lot of reading up if you are entering this field and ideally start off alongside an old hand whose got the t-shirt!

If you want to see some I'm afraid you'll either have to pay us to do you one or ask the RP of one of our clients to take a look - it's one of the few things I can't help you with, sorry!

Part K of HTM 05-03 (Fire Risk Assessment in Healthcare Premises) is a tad off the wall, but lets not forget it was designed at and approved by CFOA.  No "template" as I'm sure you all know, is "approved", so everybody has there own prefered method of carrying out FRA's.  The RRO calls for suitable and sufficient FRA and does not prescribe anything.  Following the 5 steps is a good starting point.
I personally don't use Part K, but bad, good or indifferent it beats the bits out of what came before, the dreaded tick box which was HTM 86.
I use our local Brigades prefered template and modify it to suit my Trusts unique premises, that way I know that all the IO's can read it because thats what they've been trained on.
The Government guides don't help much either, IO's are convinced that all residences where elderly people live are nursing homes, we don't have any nursing homes, we have healthcare premises where elderly people reside.
