Olsen or Fenwall robust heat detectors
« on: June 07, 2012, 11:54:01 AM »
Does anyone have experience of the installation of the Fenwall 27121  heat detector or the look-alike Olsen T54b heat detectors within process plant (ie within the plant itself, as opposed to within the building).  Most fire alarm people will be familiar with these particular devices- they have a stainless steel housing and are very robust, incorporating a bimetallic sensing element.

I would be interested to know if this is done very often and any experience of actual installations that people might have.

Are they anything like the heat detectors used on a recycling sprinkler system? They are pretty robust things.

I have installed a Hawco one years ago in a Boiler room that went to silly high temperatures when the boilers were on full.

Thought you had plenty of experts i.e. ex bank fire safety bods that could answer such a query then again maybe not

On a point of accuracy, the info was for a chum, who wanted to know people's experience of these.   Strangely, to do our job professionally, we dont ask for advice from people down the pub.

I was interested to see this topic and its a shame it seems to be going nowhere. One element of the Judges summing up (clause 100 onwards) in the Trebor Bassett / ADT case gave the impression that the siting and spec of specialist detectors connected to suppression systems within plant may not always be properly designed or appropriate and I was hoping we would learn more about this topic.

I wouldnt worry about it, Big Al. That may have been an opinion expressed, but the judge also said he could not rely on the evidence of the experts in the case, other than one who, as I recall, could not turn up to give evidence. If he cannot rely on the evidence, why would you?

Another "a bit late in the day" post but we used to use them when installing fixed CO2 systems on coating machines, foundries and associated ducting from same (particularly in Ex areas).
Pretty bomb proof BUT did have a case where they were set at particularly low temperature that unfortunately was reached when an operator used the stem as a handle when cleaning the rollers!
