one item that has been brought to my attention is -

4.2 Variation of guidance

The guidance on means of escape in Section 5 permits variations to be made to travel distances and door and/or stair widths on the basis that the level of risk can be reduced by the provision of additional fire protection measures. Such measures include an increased level of management of fire safety, the provision of an automatic sprinkler system, the provision of a smoke management system or the provision of an additional level of automatic fire detection.

I believe the items in bold are mentioned here only and no other reference to this in the document

Well spotted DD.  These elements of the overall fire safety package may contribute to an assessment of the level of safety but, as far as the BS9999 guidance goes, no variation may be made because of them as claimed here.

Stu I would be grateful if you would. I /We could obtain and use the BSI standard response form - though its not been issued yet for 9999 we could use one from a previous consultation. That would save a lot of time and deadline bashing later.
