Oil Quench tanks in the forging industry
« on: November 30, 2012, 03:33:38 PM »
I am looking for someone who can provide competent advice in respect of Oil Quench Tanks. The client has multiple sites in the North of England and are engaged in the metal forgings industry. Most of their sites have oil quench tanks and these are generally protected by very old CO2 fixed installations. My life safety fire risk assessments- and a recent fire- have identified weaknesses in their installations and management of the quench process and the need to replace the old CO2 systems. But before doing this I think they should carry out a roots and branch review of the process, the risks involved and the best protection.

This is an area beyond my comfortable level of competence- I would have no hesitation in recommending a red book company to install a new CO2 system but I wonder if new technology would be more applicable- eg is it possible to use a different media rather than combustible oil for the quench  process, or are there any quench tanks that incorporate reliable automatic lids etc etc. Similarly the quench tanks have fan driven ventilation and ducts which also represent a fire risk.

If anybody knows of any one who may have the expertise to carry out this review and may be interested please let me know.
