Fire in building following removal of extinguishers
« on: October 23, 2013, 09:39:57 AM »
PC Jerry Carr returned home after a shift at Taplow CID to find flames billowing from a flat in Atherton Court in Eton on Sunday (13) at around 6pm.

He ran into the building after realising his friend, Paula George, 60, who had been very ill, was still inside.

“I saw the flames from outside and the glass was black and I heard the windows cracking,” the 45-year-old said.

“I saw people outside and I thought that the building was clear.

“But I noticed that Paula was not out so I ran in and banged on her door because I knew that she was in there. Once she opened the door I told her that there was a fire and to get out,” he added.

After coming to Ms George’s aid, PC Carr heard coughing coming from the flat where the fire was burning.

“I started banging on the door,” he said. “When it opened I could hear the fire popping and crackling. The woman was in shock so I grabbed her and told her to get out. She looked like she had smoke marks on her and her hair was burnt.”

That is all that's online however the hard copy says - The building is owned by housing association "Radian" which removed the extinguishers around one year ago and installed electronic fire alarms.
A radian spokeswoman said "radian regularly carries out fire risk assessments and takes advice from thames valley fire (TVF) "We only removed fire extinguishers following recommendation made in these assessments and they are only removed in areas where members of the public are not trained to use them. We do still have extinguishers in high risk areas where staff are trained such as kitchens etc. blah blah blah

Thoughts?

It reads a bit like the fire was started by the lack of an extinguisher

First time I have heard of the lack of a fire extinguisher as an ignition source!

Was it a "hot" one?

Was it an electrical one?

Was it a naked flame on e?

I could go on but it gets boring.

The story is not strictly true as the off duty cop possibly rescued one and put one person's life in danger. The 'rescued' person clearly didn't need an alarm to tell her there was a fire as she was already burnt but there is a concern that the alarm wasn't mentioned at all - why didn't she get out? The other could have carried on watching Countryfile on BBC as there was a really good piece on foraging that she has now missed.

FFE in flats is a menace; they would have most likely been damaged or sold at a boot sale long before the fire anyway - also if it was safe to put out with an extinguisher he could have got the one from his own flat - being such a safety conscious citizen I'm sure he must have one.

Agree with the resultant posts here. Quite simply if you need a fire extinguisher to ensure you can get out of any building then frankly the building is already unsafe. End of.

Plus if the fire was 'billowing out of the flat' an extinguisher would have little effect (or worse if unsuited to the risk)!

I'd be more worried about:

- what started the fire
- why the AFD to the flat (if there was any) failed to prompt an early evacuation
