Hospital Streets

This section usually has tumbleweed blowing through it but anyway...

HTM 05-02 page 24 says that Hospital Streets should contain 'no other accomodation' other that sanitary accomodation and theres an explanatory diagram on page 25

The diagram depicts a Hospital Street with large units off it that are marked 'Hospital Accomodation'

I can only assume that these are depicting Wards/Outpatients etc...

so does this mean that the  'no other accomodation other than sanitory accom.' bit means no other accomodation other than  wards/outpatients are allowed apart from sanitory accom?

for example no admin offices

The 'Hospital Accommodation' isn't contained in the street, but is in separate adjacent full fire compartments of 60 minutes.

It means (in my interpretation) nothing should be contained within the fire compartment that forms the street other than toilets - so for example you couldn't have a cleaners cupboard, linen store, within the area. It would all have to be within  in a separate compartment off the street

Thanks Anthony... now you've said that, it is something I should have interpretated myself the same way....I was looking at the wards that are contained off the Street, but as you correctly point out they are a seperate compartment

Anthony is correct.  Only sanitary accommodation is permitted within the hospital street, all other accommodation should be separated by a minimum of 60 minutes fire resisting construction. 

Just one thing to note (which usually gives some problems), 3.38a prohibits entrances from the hospital street to adjoining compartments from the same section of the hospital street that provides entrances to stairs or lifts. i.e. You cannot have a cleaner's cupboard accessed from the same section of a hospital street as a stair or lift, even if the cupboard is separated by 60 minutes FR.
