Height of Illuminated Exit Sign above doorway
« on: September 16, 2015, 10:38:31 AM »
I have been asked this question and recall there was a figure of between 2m - 2.5m from floor level which I think was in BS 5266 1999. Is this figure still applicable within current standards?

Hi,

Just make sure the illiminated sign has the arrow pointing the right way - the vast majortiy of signs only have a down ward pointing arrow even though, in the majority of cases, it is the upward (i.e. go forward not down). I am amazed how often the wrong sign is fitted - even at airports and new builds - even the Fire Saftey Exp at the Excel Centre last year had major suppliers nort even displaying the up arrow signs on their stands. The other issue is making sure the sign meet the requirements of escape lighting is that is what is also required at the sign location - some signs are just that - illuminated but do not dive enough light to escape with.

Kind regards,
