Flame retardent padding
« on: August 03, 2016, 04:42:40 PM »
Hello,

I need to fit flame retardant padding to go under a staircase to provide head bump protection - I can 't seen to find any product available - does any one have any suggestions?

Many thanks,

I don't know the standards but under FIA rules the roll cages of rally cars have to conform to both impact protection and fire safety standards and retro fit padding is available on the market in a whole range of shapes and sizes. There are also standards for gymnastics equipment and mats though these often are reliant on the cover integrity.

Find a good upholsterer/supplier and ask for combustion modified foam, which should be readily available as they are used in both commercial and some domestic furniture. If covering is required then fire retardant fabrics should be available from the same supplier.
These foams comply with BS 5852, Part 2, I.S. 5 or ?crib 5.

If the underside of the staircase is a location where you'd want a Class 0 / Class B wall/ceiling lining then your best bet is foam - search for "class 0 acoustic foam sheet" & you'll find a number of such products.  I doubt you'll find "padding" that has evidence that it meets this specification.  It's a risk assessment matter as to whether you'd be happy with an upholstery spec, as the test standards are much less stringent and the configuration you're talking about isn't really the same as a piece of furniture.

Similar requirements exist in Indoor Play Areas in terms of both padding the framework and the supports for ramps, slides, stairs and other items. This may be a potential source of supply for your needs?
