Lightening Protection Test Frequency
« on: January 25, 2017, 09:31:45 PM »
I understand that the recommended frequency for routine testing of lightening conductors / installations is annually / 11 month frequency on 12 year rotation (to catch seasons). I have access to BS EN 62305 1,3 & 4 2011 and BS EN 62305 2 2012 but can't find any reference to this frequency or any other mention of general testing in any of them. I would like to verify what currently is unconfirmed information. Can anyone point me in the direction where I would find the info in the BS guides or is it kept somewhere else. Thanks

This is a quote from one testing provider:
"It is a British and European Standards requirement that all lightning protection systems are tested and inspected annually. The Standard (BS EN 62305-1:2006 Protection against Lightning: General Principles) states that "tests should be repeated at fixed intervals, preferably not exceeding 12 months; it may be advantageous to choose a period slightly shorter than 12 months in order to vary the seasons in which tests are made". This advice is given because earth resistance readings do not simply increase annually, they will invariably rise in summer months as the sub-strata (earth) dries out."

Hi Antony
Thanks for the reply, I have found similar from other company web sites and is where I got my initial info from. It appears the black and white confirmation I am seeking is in BS EN 62305-1 2006 which I don't have access too. I just expected to find some form of reference to maintenance and testing carried over in to the more recent 2011 series & 2012 BS's which I do have copies of, unless I am missing the obvious of course. Thanks again.
