Wiring covering lightning protection strips
« on: November 03, 2020, 04:11:08 PM »
I often see lightning protection strips covered over by large amounts of wiring (presumably aerials). The wires tend to but up against the strip as they run along a horizontal section of the building. Has anyone come across a fire, involving these wires, that can be directly attributed to a lightning strike? has any one every requested that be moved/removed?

Cheers,

Flashover is an issue but the lightning conductors are normally routed outside so any ignition potential in the immediate vicinity is probably unlikely. However, any flashover current or indeed current caused by inductive coupling could have devastating consequences on the low voltage cable and electronic components to which they connect. That is definitely a potential ignition source but as to an actual cause of fire that I am aware of, I do not know.
