Maximum sizes of stacks of timber
« on: May 13, 2006, 09:30:52 AM »
Please can anybody remind me of the recommended maximum stack size and essential spacings  for timber stacks?
I know various local enactments set out maximum storage stack size, height, spacings and distances from boundary / buildings, but cant find any examples on the net.

I have come across a very large stock of idle pallets very close to a large building, and have taken immediate steps to reduce the risk but its a confined site so want to get the numbers right as per accepted good standards

Thanks very much in anticipation

I tend to recommend that these should be kept 10 m away from buildings.  I think this is normal in the insurance industry.  One should also consider the security arrangements in the area, as they could be easily moved clsoer any a potential arsonist.

I also recommend that the quantity of them it as low as is reasonaly practicable.

Thanks Chris
I have told them 18m from a building, no more than 200 sq m area per stack, 4 metre fire breaks between stacks, and 1m away from perimeter fence as a first stab. I know the old local Acts used to limit the sizes of stacks and in some areas it was necessary to register stacks that did not meet the criteria with the fire brigade.
I will ring the brigade on Monday and see if they still enforce this. The old acts will die on the 1 Oct anyway which I suppose is one reason why outdoor workplaces are incorporated into RRO.

When I found it it was an 80mx 40m stack within 10 metres of the building and no fire breaks.
