A must-see programme on television this autumn will be Firefighters, a six-part documentary series that looks at the work of Strathclyde Fire & Rescue. At the time of writing the first programme was pencilled in for Tuesday 12 September at 10.35pm, with the subsequent programmes being shown at the same time each following Tuesday.
The series of half-hour shows on BBC One follows the progress of enthusiastic trainees as they are put through rigorous tests at the Scottish Fire Service College and at SFR’s training centre at Cowcaddens. Firefighters also looks at the busy yet often hilarious life inside a city fire station when it turns the camera lens on the experienced firefighters of Maryhill’s Red and Blue watches. One poignant scene shows a firefighter emptying his locker and heading off into retirement after more than 30 years’ service.
