I am currently trying a program called 'naturally speaking' which is a voice recognition software by dragon. I am hoping to use this in conjunction with a pda as the box says it can be done. If successful, this will enable me to use dropdown menus and input the text detail via bluetooth headset to pda.

The ruggedised Panasonic CF-18 DHAZBKE - the same as those the Briitish Gas engineers use.

A bit lumpy - claimed to be able to drop them from 1m - without damage - unless of course you drop one on your foot then it would - but we haven't tried either yet.

I've just picked a couple up from our local builders merchants.

The boss said get a couple in case I dropped one, 'cos they easily break. He has paid so no worries there then.

Which was nice.

He has also bought some different coloured chalks so I can split up different "catagories, locations, risk values and whatever".

Which was nice.

My fingers and hands got a bit scratched and cut, but hey, thats the risk of the job, right?

My first FRA is at the HSE offices up the road so I will keep you posted on how well I fair with my little tabs.

The missus has also got me a brown bottle with some littler tabs in for me when I get home.

Which is nice.

Dragon seems to have real problems when used with any sort of accent. In fact I had problems with it and I have no accent at all. (Most Scots have no noticeable accent).
Hope you have less trouble than us with Dragon!

I have a broad lancashire accent, so have been spending abit of time 'teaching' the program to learn my specific words I use, which are generally of the same for similar types of report. For the next few days I will be doing this and will let you know how I'm getting on.
Regards
Jasper

The Panasonic Toughbooks are about the best you can get; They can stop bullets. One saved a mans life once. But they are extremely expensive (nearing £4,000) and whats wrong with the old pen and paper anyway? You can always scan it in to your PC at work

Another idea is to use a digital pen.
Logitec manufacture a model (PC World or direct from their web site - £80 a special charger i included as well as spare ink refills).
The pens record all information written down - on special paper with micro dots imprinted on it (£10 / 3 books 125 sheets), then that information can be downloaded on to a pc etc

The pen writes as a normal biro, but stores the pattern of the dots covered with the ink. This is stored digitally and can thus be reproduced.

We have a facility set up whereby once written, the info is sent via bloothooth from the pen to the mobile from the pen, then e mailed to the office via the mobile phone and re printed immediately.

That gives us the opportunity to work on the service sheet/ quote/ survey in the office and forward quotes/ invioces/ reports etc back to the client while the engineer is still on site if a decision is needed while he is still on site for example to repair a alarm where the client needs a report to raise authorisation for extra works.

They also come in handy to confirm engineer location/ time should big brother stick his nose in!

PAS79 is not usable at the moment as it does not meet the criteria for RR(FS)O.  It is out for public comment in its new guise.
