What practical skills must you have in order to become a fire fighter, or what skills would you suggest potential recurits should have?

Not quite sure what you mean by practical skills, but if you mean skills related to firefighting duties then i wouldn't get too hung up on it as you'll get it all whilst your at training school. I intended to learn knots and lines and read manuals of firemanship etc prior to me joining, but in the end your better waiting till your recruits course and learning it then with your group of fellow trainee's (who will be in the same boat.)

You could possibly visit your local fire station and keep your hand in with regards to hose running etc, but the best advice i can give you is to keep yourself physically fit and motivated so that you are in the right frame of mind for learning the new skills at training school.

Hi, thanxs for the advice.
what i meant by the post was, wat type of practical skills would be good to show at the application form stage, and what type of experiance would be good to have, i have community working experiance, would heavy machinery experiance like factorys be good experiance to have?

The new application forms just ask you about your PQAs which have been discussed elsewhere on this forum. They arn't a very good way of selecting people but thats the way things have gone.

So very True, however I have an application form for an airport firfighter which is asking what abilties I have, I have numerious abilities just wondered which would be best to put down.

Forget hose running as this plays no part in the application and selection process. The PQAs are the way forward and despite Pete's comments are entirely appropriate way of selection, much more indicative of the qualities and attributes of applicants than a simple application form!
