I am sure there are more qualified than me to answer this fully, but at Heathrow a local standby involves a low grade difficulty and only BAA fire crews attend.

Some other emergency statuses such as a 'full emergency' (when an aircraft is due to land with a specific or suspected problem), or a 'ground incident' (same as above but when the plane is on the ground), also attract an attendance from LFB, but are often reduced to a 'local standby' (thereby releasing LFB crews) by BAA FS as soon as they are confident that the issue has been resolved.

Messy hit the nail on the head. We have different levels 'Aircraft accident' (very bad) 'Aircraft accident imminent' (also bad as it give you time to s''t yourself) 'Full emergency' aircraft has problem (bird strike, engine out, hydraulic failure and the captain wants all emergency services on the ground and ready (just in case) 'Local standby' (minor problem some captains may not require us but ATC might mobilise just the BAA Fire 'Ground incident' (can range from minor fuel spill or aircraft struck by loading vehicle or aircraft not stopping in time and striking airbridge etc). Hope this helps.

Messy are you LFB?
Isn't it funny, how if you sit in a library and scream, everyone looks at you and tuts...but do the same thing on an aircraft and everyone joins in!

Where I work Local Stby could for 1st solo flight, within airport circuit, weather stby is hence weather orientated and the call no-one wants to hear is Mayday-Mayday-Mayday hence Full Emergency.
