I Heard that a Ff was killed an another injured at a car fire on the A1M. it didn't get any news coverage on the TV. This is the same watch that lost two Ffs a few years back.

RIP Mate

Condolences to the family & colleagues.

Do we know if was the car fire that caused the death/injury or other traffic?

Here is a short statement that has been issued regarding the incident.

Two fire crews from Stevenage Blue watch were attending a car fire close to Junction 8 of the A1 at 21:16 on the night of 16th June. At approximately 21:35 the vehicle involved in the car fire was struck by another vehicle causing the death of Sub Officer Paul Mallaghan, age 46, and injuring another firefighter, both from Blue Watch, Stevenage.

Blue Watch, Stevenage had previously lost firefighters Jeff Wornham and Mike Miller in a flat fire on 2 February 2005. The inquest into their deaths only took place earlier this year.

Tony Smith, Hertfordshire FBU brigade secretary said: “Paul was an extremely well respected Sub Officer in Hertfordshire who will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues. The injured firefighter has been released from hospital and is recuperating.

“Paul’s death has devastated the Hertfordshire fire service.  The brigade and the Watch were just starting to get over the loss of firefighters Jeff Wornham and Mike Miller - also of Blue Watch, Stevenage - and now we have lost Paul.

“To lose three firefighters from the same watch at two separate incidents is cruel beyond imagination. Our thoughts are with their families, friends and colleagues.

“I would ask for the privacy of the families, friends and colleagues of Paul to be respected at this time. The entire brigade is devastated and we need time for some quiet reflection.”

Let's hope that they all rest in peace

According to the Anglia TV news the car was on the slip road leading onto the A1(M); I did not catch which direction. As mentioned above the car was struck by another vehicle, the collision also involving the fire-fighter and others.

The Stn I serve at is on the Border with Herts and I recently met a crew from Cheshunt at an incident.  It was just days after the terrible loss of the Sub Officer from stevenage.  The Cheshunt Sub O I was talking to was clearly gutted as would be expected but went on to describe Paul (The Sub who lost his life) as one of those blokes everyone liked.  As we were leaving he grabbed me by the arm, looked me in the eyes and said I know people always say that about those that lose thier lives but this time its true!
There but for the grace of god go any of us.
(RIP face)
Hi, Im 42 year old Sub Officer at Waltham Abbey Day Crewed Stn in Essex, so I have a little time on my own to kill.  I served 15 years at Harlow (Wholetime) Firestn and flew through the ranks as you can clearly see from the mighty rank I currently hold.  I will say this though.  I've served 19 years now and I still love the job we do.  I'll enjoy talking with any of ya.

(Nice to meet ya face)
