Intumescent Strips
« on: August 13, 2007, 08:46:32 PM »
I have just had this advice from the Fire Safety Advice Centre stating that according to British Standard BS 476 : Part 22 that all intumescent seals / strips can be over painted!

I have always recommended that if they are painted over that they should be replaced!

I wondered if any of you had a particular view on this?

Check out Auntie LIn's bible at http://www.asdma.com/ section 14.7 page 42. I bet you would'ent dare to argue with Auntie LIn.
All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.

You are correct I would never argue with Auntie LIn however I have to order the book (and pay for it!  My firm are a bit miserly in that regard!) before I can read it!  There does not appear to be an online version that I can access!

If you could give me a hint I would be ever so grateful!

Geoff - if you've had such grief finding the Best Practice Guide on the web, send me your address and I'll send you a real book (free, gratis - and for nothing!).

Just emailed the address to you and thanks for the help.

The boss is really happy he likes getting things for free, he's a complete cheapskate! Lol!

Again many thanks.

Regarding the painting of intumescent strips. Where just an intumescent strip is used it should not be affected by being painted over . On the other hand where intumescent strips incorporate cold smoke seals then these should not be painted over as it can severley affect their ability in preventing the passage of cold smoke beyond the point of origin
