5839 pt6? Cost effective?
« on: December 01, 2007, 05:05:08 PM »
Seeking advice on which system will satisfy, client costs in mind.

A sports club, ground floor only, wooden construction, changing rooms, showers, kitchen, bar, store rooms, 10 rooms in all including a corridor.  Occupancy limited to 59, inward opening doors (can't reverse), remote location, building used by various groups, not all familiar, looking to install AFD for early warning only to hopefully instigate a rapid evacuation.

Would it be cost affective to install a 5839 pt 6 A, B, or C or go for a 5839 pt1 as per small assembly guide?

A fire panel, single detector and call point are currently installed from the 80's.

Some smaller offices and the odd very small shops seem to have pt6 systems (I know the standard says this isn't what should be there, but its a risk based solution) in place of having nothing in the past & that, although not perfect they do the job.

I would say that the risks in these premises, although small in size, are higher - readily combustible materials/construction, unfamiliar (or inebriated!) persons, restricted MoE that probably do not have panic fastenings (max of 59 is handily 1 under the number in the old guides for use of panic fastenings) - so I would think that the robustness & reliability of a Pt1 system is the way to go.

I would want to cover extensive detection as the structure is readily flammable and I wouldn't want to rely on most of the occupants, especially the public, actually remembering to activate a break glass unit - in a recent fire in one of the buildings we have looked at the people who found the fire didn't break a call point and the brigade had to initiate evacuation - fortunately none was hurt as a result of the delay

By the way, most of the pt6 systems used in small workplaces are based around Class C, so they don't need to use fire resistant cabling (based on the code) - this is where  the biggest savings are.

As twinwire conventional systems become more wide used and cheaper then they will negate some of the price benefits of Pt6 systems against traditional pt 1 conventional fire alarm systems where you have to wire in separate detection/MCP & sounder circuits

I have a very good relationship with an associate fire alarm company that I use for all fire alarm issues on the FRA's that we conduct.  Recently I sought advice on the installation of a small system in a kitchen display center ( 4 manual call points, panel and 8 detectors)  the price for the part 6 system was slightly more expensive than the part 1 due to the cost of the component parts.  If you e mail me I can put you in contact to give you the most appropriate advice and cost effective solution.
