Hi Bambie

I am not RAF Fire Service, nor do i have any experience of it. But i would assume that the 'rat run' will be the BA part of the assessment.

Usually consists of a series of tunnels, hatches and generally quite confined areas in which you will have to negotiate as part of a 2 person team. 1 person leads in, 2nd person leads out. They are generally looking for your confidence in small claustrophobic spaces and your communication and team working ability.

Hopefully one of the RAF lads on here can shed more light on it. Good luck.

I am a serving RAF firefighter curently based within the training environment at CTE Manston. All the advice given on this thread s far is accurate, however the RAF will move to the national firefighter selection tests from Aug 08.

The comment you made about the National selection tests is intresting. Do you think it will that mean that it is going to be easier in future to transfer between MOD and RAF fire Service to Local Authority Fire Service?

Hi there im in the Royal Navy and for our 3 day acquaint we had to do a "rat run" with BA and with our headovers turned back to front to simulate a dark atmosphere and to get us disorientated. It was fun. Also we pitched a triple extension ladder to a side of a building and climbed it took a leg lock and had to lean back for 3 seconds. Dont worry about it im sure in the interest of Health & Safety they will give you a comprehensive brief before you undergo any tasks.

Good luck but you should have joined the senior service lol.

Well maybe, but tbh we are losing more than enough guys on the strength of their NVQ's anyway. I cant see that initial tests are going to make much difference to the overall picture.
