Wheeled CO2 Extinguisher
« on: February 12, 2008, 04:23:40 PM »
I have just visited a client who has number of large wheeled CO2 extinguishers that they use around thier recycling facility, however they have not been tested or checked. Thier local extinguisher contractor has no idea where these large extinguishers can be tested and refilled which I find strange.

Does anyone here know of a company that would carry out tests, refills etc of such large wheeled extinguishers as the client would like to keep such a facility due to the nature of the site and its operations. The company is based in the south west midlands.

Thanks

Any reputable fire extinguisher contractor should be able to do this.

Cant recommend any as such, but would refer you to the Yellow Pages - ring around for best quote really.

Cheers

Contact UK fire in Norwich. They used to supply them across the UK I think to fire extinguisher companies. May be able to direct you.

Chubb do extinguishers on wheels - if you can afford their prices.

UK Fire can test as a manufacturer and servicing company. A small number of independent test stations exist, as well as the one mentioned there is one in the South West http://www.fire-protection-phoenix.co.uk/ who collect in a 150 mile radius.

Any extinguisher company using Thomas Glover as a supplier can get the wheeled units tested, filled & refurbed by them.

If they are out of test and need an overhaul it could be cheaper to replace as there are widely available CO2 trolleys - if you don't mind Italian or Far East kit, but it's worth getting a test and re-valve price before going down that road.

Last time I dealt with trolley CO2's was in steelworks nearly 20 years ago as they always had few in case the bins of 12 x 5 or 6.8 kg CO2 extinguishers all over the place weren't enough. Trouble was they were usually old Pyrene or Minimax units dating to the 50's (with loads of retest stamps on) and were thus rather solid (& damn heavy) steel instead of aluminium and loading them onto a flatbed without a tail lift was an absolute nightmare - even empty!

ABS (Italian) via Express Fire, Mcr for good quality new units - CE and Marine Wheel Rated (No BS exists for wheeled units). Compare TG test cost with new initially, but assess the clients requirements before testing the lot. It may be more appropriate and cost effective for them to buy new i.e. ABS et al.

There is a BS EN for wheeled extinguishers - BSEN 1866:2005 (replaces a 1999 version) for Mobile Fire Extinguishers, defined as an "extinguisher that is designed to be transportable and operated by hand that has a total mass of more than 20 kg and which is mounted on wheels"

However strangely it only covers water, water additive, foam & powder extinguishers, not CO2.

As the volume of sales of wheeled extinguishers is far less than portables it probably explains why manufacturers don't bother going for the kitemark (or their national equivalent) as sales don't justify the expense unlike getting the Marine Wheelmark as that affects their ability to sell to a significant part of the mobile extinguisher market (which is mostly split between marine & aviation markets with a small bit of general industry thrown in)

ABS stuff from Express does have a good reputation, as does Express themselves- I suggest any fire protection company take a look at Express, we use them for almost everything now.
