I signed up for sheilds and found it diffcult to follow, eventually went to woodland grange (4 days course) and I passed with flying colours, distance learning is only as good as you are being disiplined, I prefer a lecturer and networking with others in a classroom, contact woodland grange they have a good lecturer from oxfordshire bridage

goo luck

I carried out my NEBOSH, (only at Certificate level), at Plymouth College of Further Education in 2000, 2 choices of course, 1 day a week for 13 weeks or an intense 2 week course, I had to opt for the former as I was still in the service, but I reccomend the latter to prevent "Brain-Fade" between topics. I found the fire safety element sadly lacking and my course mates from other job environments struggled so I helped them out. The most important thing I wanted to say here is that the NEBOSH counted a long way in points scoring for my HNC Fire Safety from UCLAN, it is definatley worth doing as when I carry out FRA's I can also identify other safety issues that are not fire related, with some sort of competencey and background....a useful tool

Completed NOBOSH General & Fire Certificate Course, Nebosh 2 weeks Nebosh Fire Certificate 1 week, although I would not feel safe to carry out fire risk assessments with only these qualifications. I completed both for CPD purposes and to have a greater awareness in relation to Health & Safety. Any knowledge in relation to Fire, Health & Safety is an asset. However the Fire Certificate Course needs to reflect current legislation in respect of the RRFSO and the HM Government guides, I believe in time these courses will improve. A great advantage stated by Devon4ever they provide points scoring fof an HNC in Fire Safety.

Have you got anymore details on that at all Tonyfog? would be intrested in doing that course

I understand the HNC and HND are no more now, no one does it, Fire Service College says it has been replaced by the Fire Engineering Degree apparently.

Am a bit long in the tiooth to do a three or more year course

Be great to find a nationally recognised qual which takes into account the training ive already done.

RE: Provider in the NW, I suggest if anyone already has the NGCert, that they consider a company based in Carlisle, very good pass rates and will carry out the Fire Element as a stand alone. They are called 'Woodward SHE' , if anyone requires more details let me know.

I passed the NEBOSH Fire Cert with Shields distance learning.  The discipline required to complete all of the modules is quite intense.  However, that said if you already have an underpinning knowledge of fire safety, certain elements are a breeze.  That said, I struggled to complete all of the modules due to work committements, still sat the paper because I did not want to lose my money!! And still passed.

The support from Shields was good, but like other people have said, if distance learning is not for you, find a residential course!

Black arts if you are anywhere near Sheffield the local chamber of commerce do the general certificate course 1 day for 13 weeks and have a pass rate way up in the high 90% range. Cost for non members around £1100 fully inclusive  (I ran several courses on their behalf a couple of years ago)
