I caught sight of an advert in the (London)  'Evening Standard' tonight (8th May, page 49) by G4S for retained firefighters. The heading was "G4S Fire Services, London, the Home Counties & Nationwide".

The ad said I could find out more on their website, but I could find nothing further!

Anyone any idea what G4S are up to?

I thought about that but as it seems to be active fire-fighters they are after I think my 60+ years would probably rule me out. And if it's to go out abroad on some sort of back-up duty I would not be very enthusiastic about that!

My understanding is they are trying to fill positions for a US military contract in Iraq where they employ 800 FFs. It does mention Baghdad in the advert but sweetens the job by mentioning The Kennedy Space Centre and Amsterdam

The weblink still aint working

Could we count on you in an emergency?

G4S Fire Services
London, the Home Counties & Nationwide

If you'd like to make a real difference in society - while also earning some extra money - think about joining G4S Fire Services. As a large and expanding global employer, we're preparing to launch our new fire service, and are seeking committed, enthusiastic people to join us. G4S Fire Services is part of G4S Plc, the UK's leading security solutions provider with 530,000 staff in 115 countries. Throughout the world we provide fire and rescue services to locations such as the Kennedy Space Centre, Baghdad and Amsterdam airports.

Working within a retained contract you will get advance warning of when you are needed and this could be up to 14 days notice, although the ability to respond within 24 hours will be required from some staff.

This might not happen often - but when it does, you'll be carrying out a vital emergency role within the community. While experience would be useful (particularly if you have an HGV driving qualification), we provide comprehensive initial training. All we ask is that you pass a medical and can make yourself available at short notice. And whatever your level of experience, we'll provide six days' training per year.

These roles are ideal for people who are self-employed or work flexible hours, so it minimises disruption to your work when you get called out. This callout may involve deployments of a day or two, but in exceptional circumstances could be for an extended period. On top of your £1500 yearly retainer, you'll get paid for every shift you work - we'll also cover all your work expenses and accommodation on call-outs.

If you are looking for a new challenge and some extra income then please email your CV with a covering letter explaining why you would be a great firefighter to: g4sfirefighter@uk.g4s.com

I worked for G4 in a security/fire/first aid role. I am not surprised they are trying to increase their role. They had a number of sites which they supplied fire and security cover. Usually the manning on the site had no spare capacity for leave/sickness etc and they would try to pull in floating guards to cover any shortfall. If they couldn't get cover then we ran short. They ran the manning on what the customer wanted, so if the customer said they wanted a pump with a three man crew to provide BA capability that is what they got. The main aim of the customer was that if they had a works fire service their insurance bill dropped by about a million. G4 would give the customer what they wanted, so if the customer wanted the fire extinguishers serviced thats what we did. The supervisors got trained and then they told us what to do.

The supervisors ran the setup some were retained, others were not. Everyone had a one week firefighting course and a one week BA course at M in M. After that nothing, it was not possible to drill with the equipment and standard tests only happened because I did them. Occaisionally one of the supervisors would try to drill but their lack of knowledge shone out. One of the retained supervisors had the men crawling under the appliance in BA! Most of the time it seemed to be an exercise in ego boosting for the supervisor.

Fortunately when I was there the biggest job was a car engine fire and I had to pull the supervisor away from the fire. In the best yank movie tradition his fire tunic was undone and the flames were licking his nato jumper! On numerous occaisions the supervisor would head off into a building to investigate a fire alarm without rigging first.

I stuck with it until I got another job and left.

The standard work pattern was a twelve hour shift to give 48 hrs a week average.
The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely to be preferred to those who think they've found it.

Dear Sir/Madam

I am currently employed by GSL as a Prisoner Custody Officer and a Control and Restraint instructor based at Preston, Lancashire.

As part of the aquisiton of GSL by G4S I received a welcome pack and a newsletter which has an article about becoming a fire fighter within the company,   I would like to express my interest for this position as I feel I would be an assett to the role as I see myself as a fit, strong and healthy person who likes to work out daily, I feel I have the desired attributes to be a well valued fire fighter.

I would also like to add that I have ample experience in working within a team and on my own initiative and in very stressful situations.

I hope to hear from you with regards to the said position.

Yours faithfully

Thanks for the information. I though it was probably along the lines that Messy and Mike have indicated.
