Laptop?

What laptops does everyone use to hook up to fire panels? I'm thinking of getting this one and was wondering if anyone else used one?

Thanks

Try and get one with a serial port, makes life much simpler.
I have had lots of probs with USB to serial adaptors and in the end I bought a s/h Dell with serial port just to keep in the van.
One that caught me out was CTEC's XFP software - it will only work with XP (or vista. i presume).

Use a laptop with the fastest processor that you can afford. If you are using it only for panel configuration purposes then the HDD size is not so critical but i would suggest at least 40gb.
Many existing upload leads are for use with serial ports. however this will change with new software versions using the more popular USB ports. If you can get a laptop with both serial and USB ports then so much the better.
Even though it is becoming less popular, I still feel it is worth having a floppy disk drive. A CD drive is a necessity.
The operating software loaded onto the laptop is critical. Many existing configuration programmes cannot handle Windows Vista software. Try to get Windows 2000 or Windows XP in any of variants. Software configuration writers will eventually 'debug' their programmes to work with Vista, but it may take some time.
The most important thing is you will be transporting the laptop between sites and using it on sites. It will have a hard life. Dust, vibration and knocks must all be taken into account. maybe a cheap refurbished second-hand model could be a good idea.
Finally, you will often be standing in a front of a panel balancing the laptop on your arms - size and weight can also be a critical factor!

Fast processor is not necessarily a good idea, I have had no problems myself, but have heard of transfer rates being too fast for some older panels.
My s/h lappy cost me about £150 and is just as good as my good one! Plus, at that price it doesnt matter if I kill it or if it gets nicked from the van.

WiZ - "Finally, you will often be standing in a front of a panel balancing the laptop on your arms - size and weight can also be a critical factor!"  sounds familiar!

AllyMacG do not waste your words it most probably a email bot it’s up to the moderator to delete this spam. It happen to my FireNet guestbook and it is hoped FireNet will get an anti spam defence.
All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.

Yeah twsutton your probably right but it is frustrating seeing things like this on the forum as it's not long since we had some other abuse on it ( if you look at the 'abuse' topic in the general interest section ) you will see what I am talking about, but as you say hopefully the moderator will have some anti-spam in place soon.
