Whats going on with the FPA and IFE
« on: February 20, 2012, 07:58:28 AM »
I note that the IFE have moved to new offices at Stratford upon Avon and are no longer working with the FPA to produce the FRM magazine- indeed in an email last week they say they are launching a new magazine.

Important Announcement - 17th February 2012

The IFE is proud to announce that, from July 2012, we will be launching our own journal. Members will see an exciting new IFE publication and better online resources. Unfortunately, it has come to our attention that the FPA trade association has published an article today wrongly implying that IFE members will not receive a journal if they do not pay a subscription to the FPA. This is simply not the case. There is no need for IFE members to make any payment to the FPA whatsoever. IFE members will continue to receive, free-of-charge, the IFE journal as an important benefit of membership.

2012 will be a landmark year for our great Institution, with our own premises, and our own dedicated IFE journal.   With many thanks for your dedication to the IFE,

 Louise Craig, CEO

Is this the end of Fire Risk Management?
Have these two erstwhile organisations had a bust up?
Is Louise correct - does the FPA now operate as a trade association?

Kurnal in my opinion the FPA/IFE was always a mismatch - one side is profit driven the other trying to make a name as a professional members organisation; I think they're better off representing their members as separate organisations. I've also heard on the grapevine that the FPA were trying to squeeze a little too much out of the IFE than they initially thought.

As an IFE member I also believe there is a great opportunity now for the IFE to move forward and become a truly independent body within the accreditation/competency fiasco discussions and become the examining body for the UK fire services.

When I was on the Board of the IFE at every opportunity I pointed out that FRM did what it did, but it was not the correct vehicle for a professional body journal.  It became so common for me to raise it people always groanded and said not again.  It seems my views are now vindicated.

Funnily enough Kurnal, I sent an email to be forwarded to the Board only this evening.

The IFE journal will now appear in Fire magazine and the four issues a year including it will be distributed free to IFE members.

From the FPA statement -  Of course IFE members will not recieve Fire Protection from the FOA without a subscription, but that is the FOA's subscription they meant! They won't get the FPA's journal any longer from their IFE subs. No loss there.
