Dead end corridor with pictures
« on: September 25, 2008, 10:46:45 PM »
In a dead end corridor approx 10m long with 5 small offices leading onto it, some pictures have been mounted on the first couple of metres of either wall.  The pictures are of various sizes and are foam backed.  I have a feeling that the occupants intend to mount pictures down the full length of the corridor.

Normally I would recommend that they are removed but the only source of ignition is the lighting, the workforce is very disciplined and the whole building (including the corridor obviously) is provisioned with AFD and sprinklers.

Would you class the pictures as an acceptable risk or recommend that they be removed?

Scale and context say its probably ok and as a smoke detector is fitted in the corridor you could treat it all as an inner room.
On the other hand why not follow the principles of prevention and use something better than foam board to mount the pictures in future?

There are some "rules" applied in schools for this kind of thing - have a decko at the stuff on teachernet.

in my opinion, i wouldn't enforce their removal. within the context you explained i think it could be argued it's a manged, minor and therefore acceptable risk.

maybe at the most i would ask them, if possible, to remove the foam backing. due to the speed in which it could spread fire and the potentialy toxic vapours released in a fire.

i would suggest they refer to it in their FRA so that they satisfy any futur Audits carried out by the Local FRS
