Hi

I have been asked if the original double fire exit doors can be replaced with automatic sliding doors of which will be operated by PIR's. The building is fitted with AFD throughout. Could I ask what are the requirements regarding power failure during an fire evacuation bearing in mind I also need give insure the security of the building during out of hours use.

Doors should not be a problem.  Have a look at BS 7273 part 4 which is the tsnadrad for electronic doors.

PIR controlled sliding doors should not be a problem in most situations provided you have a back up power supply to ensure their operation in any emergency. Some types have doors that will hinge outwards if pushed hard.
I think some care is needed - consider situations where a stampede situation may arise and ensure that the doors do not slide into an area that could be obstructed.  They need to be set carefully with a wide sweeping  PIR sensitive to a distance that the doors are fully open by the time the person reaches the door.

As in 'the old' days' consideration may be given to fire exit doors to the side of sliders...

I often see them in sheltered schemes where they open on power failure or fire alarm activation to leave the exit clear.

Approved Doc B (2) page 55 details the circumstances where they are acceptable.
This includes Kurnals scenario.
