Help Needed

Hi

I am applying for the post of Fire Trainer within the NHS Trust where i work.  I have an interview shortly, i have been asked to prepare a 5 minute presentation on the 'Basic Principles of Fire Safety for New Starters'.  I have been doing departmental training for 10 years now but i have not got a clue where to start with this post so i would appreciate any help/advice offered.

I'm no expert in this field but I would consider what the NHS trust would want the new starters to know, such as;

Actions to be carried out on hearing the fire alarm
Actions to be carried out on discovering a fire
Muster points on hearing the fire alarm
Methods of calling the fire service within the NHS trust property or the relevant swith board within the hospital
Types of manual call point
How to identify which fire extinguisher to use, if you need to use one in order to make your safe escape

and a quick Summary will be about all you have time for!

I think the presentation is about a new starters session not an example of one.

I'd strungle to cover all the ground necessary for people working in a corner shop in 5 minutes it would be irresponsible to cover hospital fire safey in 5 mins.

Brian makes a very valid point there, maybe you should cover the headings of what you would put in to a new starter presentation.  
One thing I would recommend is practice your presentation, check your timings and your content and it will pay off big time.  I always do a practice with new material which gets me used to saying what I want to say, I reflect on what I said and how I could improve it.  I find this helps a lot and when I give my presentations, they flow better.

Yes I think Wee Brian hits the nail on the head - I think the interview poanel will be looking for you to give them a five minute presentation on the type of training you propose to give to new employees.

So for example you will say " in my presentaion i will cover the following areas....it will take this ammount of time.... i will use power point and other visual aids...the following aims and objectives will be satisfied.... etc etc"

I did the same sort of interview a few years ago (although I didn't take the job) and agree with the comments. 5 mins will fly by! What I did was prepare a slide covering points I would cover in the induction training.
