Thanks for reading.

I have recently passed my psychometric tests with West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

I now have the physical assessment and all being well the interview.

If anyone can offer me any advice on passing the physical assessment I'd be very grateful.

Also if there are any stations willing to show me around I would like to come and learn more about what you do / the role of Firefighter.

Many thanks,

Dave.

Best thing to do is go down to your local station or phone them to ask to book an appointment and they will be more than happy to fit you in at a convinient time

in terms of your physical - prepare well, make sure your fit with a mixture of weights and cardio, dont worry about physical to much as long as you have prepared you will be fine may i suggest having a look at fire fit steering group, type it into google and that details exactly what happens in the physical so you can get the gist of it.

when you get to the interview stage (hopefully you will) then make sure you prepare using the PQA guidelines that you can get from the west yorkshire website, if you get to the interview stage write on this wall again and i can help you with questions if you wish!!! i know how you feel as i am currently waiting for the doctor to sign me fit to join west yorkshire in september

I think that trying to mimick the tests as close as possible would be helpful, obviously there is limitations on many of them, but the more physical ones can be specifically prepared for.

The equipment carry is the one i found the hardest. Try carrying weights 'farmers walk' style up and down a 25m distance, anything fairly awkward that weighs a bit will help, i think the heaviest weight on this test is around 30k. Wear reasonably heavy clothing and wellies if you can, this may sound silly, but the gear you are wearing makes a hell of a difference when you are actually doing the tests!

make sure you have a good balance between your strength and cardio, the tests require a decent level of both.

if the brigade does a bleep test then practice that. greater manchester used a bleep test instead of the chester step test. i have both on cd, if you want to pm me your address i can send you a copy of either.

most of all listen carefully and put in 110% effort on the day, they are looking out for determined people who dont  give up!
