Eyesight Requirements
« on: July 07, 2008, 11:23:09 AM »
Hi,

I have currently passed an initial interview with the station manager at my local station to become a retained firefighter and have just received a letter containing information on the assessment day that i need to attend.

I have not yet been for my medical and i am worried about my eyesight. I am short sighted but i wear contact lenses and my vision is perfect with them.

Will this affect my application at the medical stage?

I will appreciate any help/advice anyone can give me.

Thanks,

Ross.

I was with a guy on my initial courses who was shortsighted, he has special glasses provided for him by occupational health, which he wore during firefighting duties (including BA).

Make sure you let them know at the medical. Perhaps enquire about it before attending. I may be wrong about my colleagues specific eyesight condition though, as it was a while ago, but he definatly needed glasses.

It is down to each FRS to decide. Some will allow entry with aided vision others wont. Contact them and ask.
Any views I express are my own and not my employers. Still confused!

Thanks for your help!

I will get in contact with them and find out.

I might just go for the medical anyway and try my luck!

Thanks.
