Having done the first stage with Gloucestershire FRS and hopefully due to proceed to the next stage of the fitness appraisal I was wondering if anyone has any advice on the best way to prepare for the cage crawl.  The last time I tried this I found it difficult and failed having found the other tests easy.

And what about the step test.  Last time I completed a bleep test and got to around level 10 which at the time was enough.   Is that a good indication?

Hi there,

I completed the cage crawl in my recruitment for tyne and wear brigade in June. A friend who is in brigade gave me a useful tip which helped me along, it sounds quites basic and obvious but it really did help me.

You actually go through the cage first time with full visibilty then at the other end vision is taken away and you are asked to return to the start. On my way back through cage i went through with an arm extended where possible, this enables you to discover a dead end or wrong turn at least an arms length in time better than you would if you were to just rush through head first. Due to this being a timed event every second counts!!! I know this is quite basic advice but it is something that will help get you through. Remember that alot of the cage is designed so that you must crawl through therefore your entry and exit points could be diaganol, up a height or down at the botto of the cage.

Hope that helps and good luck!

Jonny

There is only one possible route you can take through the crawl. A wee tip is to follow the left hand side of the crawl area all the way to the mid point.

When you turn round, you then simply follow the right hand side all the way back out.

sounds like your's may have been a bit different to mine in that case as the cage crawl that I completed for tyne and wear in June this year had exits/entries that where  at all different angles at both sides of the cages.

On my attempt I dived into the thing.  Having done it the arm thing makes perfect sense!
