PQA Interview
« on: July 25, 2008, 07:30:42 AM »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me, I applied last year for Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service and managed to get to the last stage which is the interview. Which I unfortnatly failed due to being ill prepared however this year Iam applying again and Iam determined not to fail this stage again.

I was sent a interview prepartion sheet last year and Iam using it prepare this year as I figure the same sort of qeustion might be asked, One of which was coping with pressure and demands now I have studied the PQA framework I have obtained and have the perfect example to give (I was the driver of a train that caught on fire) however I cant decided excatly what PQA is being assesed here. Can anyone help me with this?

I believe the qeustion was something like Can you give me and example of a time you have been under intense pressure and had alot of demands placed on you?.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Think it is asking how you coped with the intense pressure and demands of a situation. Looking to see if you are the kind of person that  can handle the pressue and not buckle.

I would say that your particular example fits the 'Confidence and Resilience' PQA perfectly.

You probably already have a copy of the PQA's but if not the link is below:

http://www.ipds.co.uk/public/site/newsdocs29/Firefighter%20PQAs.pdf

Have a look at the BARS on:

http://www.ipds.co.uk/adc/

Those for the position of Ff are not listed for some reason, so have a look at those for Supervisory Level. They will show you how your examples will probably be marked. The 'constructs' break down each PQA into sections that you can work with. Try to provide an example that covers as many of the constructs for every PQA as possible. There will be certain constructs that your example will not cover, so have a second or even third example that will allow you to cover those constructs if asked.

Best of luck.

Hi johno

I totally agree I was thinking confidence and resillence was the the PQa but i need clarification on that. I was wondering are you currently employed by a Fire and Rescue service As I have prepared alot of answer to some fo these question with example from my life and It would be great if i could email them to you for you to look over and give me some feedback on.

If you could send me an email my email is darren_d3@hotmail.com and I could reply attaching the answers to the emails for you to look over.

thanks

Darren

Hi Darren,

I do work for the F&RS, and although not an assessor, I will give general advice on the forum on where to look and how to go about preparing for selection processes that I have experience of. Unfortunately I'm not in a position where I have either the time or inclination to vet other people's application forms (unless for a close friend of course).

There may be professional services available that may be able to help you with this. Hannahcv, who uses this forum produces a workbook that you might find helpful, details of which you can find at:

http://www.passyourinterview.com/

I purchased one of these workbooks for a recent ADC for Middle Management and found it of some use, and I passed. (Hannah, you have my details on file for the commission payment).

Anyway, best of luck with your application.

I was just wondering if there was anyone reading this thread that would be able to look over my answer for coping with pressure and demands and provide me with some advice and feedback. Someone within recruitment in the fire service or anyone in the fire service who can provide me with advice on this subjct would be great.

thanks darren

Each question will probably be related to one particular PQA. From the experience I have of these interviews, the assessor will normally ask you an opening question, for example - 'Can you give me an example of a time you have been under intense pressure and had a lot of demands placed on you?'. You will give your answer and then the assessor will normally ask probing questions to see how your behaviour alligns with elements of the PQA, marking them against the BARS.

So he may want to look at your 'emotional control', and will do so by asking relevant questions, such as 'Ok Darren, you were obviously under a lot of pressure during this event, how did that make you feel? Did you feel able to cope with the events unfolding around you?' etc. This is your opportunity to show that 'remained rational and in control of your emotions despite being under intense pressure'.

I usually prepare by chosing a different example for each PQA that I am going to be tested on, ensuring that it covers as many of the constructs in the BARS as possible. If there is a particular element that my example doesn't cover then I will have another example in reserve that I can call on if required.

You will have probably noticed during your previous interview that one assessor will be asking the questions and one will be writing away furiously. The scribe will actually be trying to write down everything that you say and he will use this to mark you after the interview has finished. So try to talk at a pace where he can get down most of the information that you are giving, but don't get drawn into looking for him to stop writing before continuing with you answer. We all tend to speed up our speech when we are nervous, but do try to keep it under control to ensure that you don't needlesly lose marks.

HI all,

Sorry to annoy everyone again with this post but as I prevesiously mentioned I got to the final interview last year and unfortnatly failed so Iam preparing again for this years recruitment drive which begun in august.

I can remember most of the qeustion I was asked last year but no matter how much I try and rack my brain I cant remember the qeustion I was asked on the topic of valuing different groups and indivisauls. Can anyone help my by providing me with examples of these types of qeustions or if anyone who was on the recruitment drive  last year for either Fife Fire and Rescue, Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue or Dumfires and Galloway Fire and Rescue Service who remembers any of the qeustions and provide me with me them. If you could contact me on this thread or my email is darren_d3@hotmail.com.

Also I have asked what motivates me as one of the qeustion was on the topic of motivation to achieve tasks effectively I thought I gave a really good example of this but apparently not.  so if anyone could help me with this it would be most appreciated.

thanks
