smoke detection in atria
« on: October 22, 2008, 11:43:28 AM »
An aspirating type system has been specified for the smoke detection within an atria space. We are advised that the sample pipes/tubes must be red. Is this correct? The architect is keen for the system to be as invisible as possible. Any suggestions would be greatly received.

I believe the idea of the red colour for the pipework is to attempt to ensure it is easily identifiable from other services.

I dont think that is correct, you can certainly buy white aspirating pipe in white, its also specified as copper on some historic properties(this can cause problems with condensation in some applications).

They even market a tape thats affixed to pipe other than the pre printed pipe they sell in red or white.

Might be worth giving the supplier of the aspirator a call, or theres plenty of pipe suppliers if you google it

Like Greg I dont think this is correct. Perhaps someone is confusing this with claus 26 2 (o) of BS5829  part 1 which talks about the colour of fire alarm cables?

This isn't correct.  The pipe can be any colour and is obtainable from the manufacturer at a slightly increased cost from red pipe.

It needs to be identified as fire alarm pipework.  Maybe I suggest that a label is affixed every few metres maybe to overcome this?

Incidently it's the same scenario with installed cables.  A white FP is available and I have seen this installed but labled every metre that it is fire alarm cable
