Asthmatic firefighters
« on: July 03, 2009, 10:56:22 PM »
I posted back in March/April time asking any firefighters, or know any firefighters who have asthma and wheather it was brought up in there medical before starting their training.

Because I have asthma i have been asked to make an appointment at a hospital to have further tests. Does anyone know what this may entail?

If the asthma can be controlled and isnt a detriment to your role as a firefighter then you have nothing to worry about. I have worked with asthmatic firemen before now and its never been an issue but it does depend on the severtity of the condition.

Pure economics if the F&R Service is making you do this. All it is doing is ensuring that it can get the requisite years out of you to make sure you are value for money.

hi mate, i have been through (and still am going through)the asthma thing. i applied well over a year ago and have still not been offered a position. a lot of this is is due to an extremely poor third party occupational health adviser the frs used (they have since been binned to my delight)!

i declared use of an inhaler on my questionarre even though i had not used one for years. this set alarm bells ringing and they sent me for a histamine test. this determines the severity of asthma by the inhalation of verying doses of histamine. i presume a severe asthmatic would react quickly and therefore 'fail' the test. i failed the first time but because i had a cold, i was re-prescribed an inhaler (preventer) and re took the test a couple of months later, which i passed.

the chest specialist has since reported that my condition, with inhalers taken each day is suitable for using breathing apparatus ect. i now have to go for yet another medical with the new advisers but i have a specialists report, so there is still a tiny bit of light at the end of this very long tunnel!

other suggestions were an exercise test on a treadmill, and a gp letter (which said i was fine.)

i dont know whether or not i will be offered a post. just be prepared for the long haul because they take this VERY seriously, too seriously in fact. this is just one frs it may differ in others. if you are a moderate asthmatic whose symptoms are easily controlled with a preventer then there is a chance you may get in, but if you need a regular reliever or have allergic asthma, forget it.

vikingmma, Monday went well, i think! but like you said, ill have to go back for a histamine test next month. The doctor i spoke to was very good and said that it shouldnt be a problem though.

Any news your end?

no news as yet except that i am scheduled for another medical at the end of this month. this will be with the new occy health advisers. i do have a letter from my gp stating that i have no current breathing problems and also a letter from the lung specialist stating that my 'level of airway reactivity is entirely compatible with breathing apparatus'. so fingers crossed!

i will post how i get on mate, keep me posted how you get on as well!

Hello Vikingmma, I has my lung fuction and hitamine test on Tuesday and all went well, they were looking for a minimum of 20% drop in my lung fuction to which i reached a maximum of 2%, so cleared it easily! I hopefully should be hearing from the brigade soon. Any news your way?

hi pal.

i had my medical and they said i was fine. went on holiday and the frs rang me friday with a job offer!

just got to do a repeat bleep test weds.

over the moon mate! just shows that you should keep plodding on even when it seems unlikely that you will get in! it aint over till its over!

your results seem very good, i would think they mean there isnt even a suspicion of asthma.

looks like you may get the call soon pal!

keep posting and let us know how you get on.
