Anyone sold or bought a Gloria Dry Powder in the last 2 years ?
« on: February 16, 2009, 03:36:43 PM »
Received:12.2.2009
From: Colin Jackson c/o Thomas Glover & Company

"Gloria is undertaking a safety information and corrective action programme covering certain models of the Gloria and Kidde PD range of extinguishers supplied in the UK as some extinguishers may fail to operate when used. Although all the extinguishers are entirely safe to handle, as a responsible producer Gloria is nonehteless notifying this information to the relevant authorities and advising corrective action.

"The risk only arises in 4, 6, 9 & 12kg products where the valve bolt is over extended"

"While the date range is still being refined, potentially affected units are from the production period no broader than January 2007 to October 2008"

The more you read of this circular, the more this sounds pretty desperate and urgent.
There is a fiddly procedure to repair / rectify, but if your not in the TG / Kidde / Chubb / Gloria loop, I suggest you contact them for details ASAP. You will need to get some top levers and a gapping gauge F.O.C..
These extinguishers may also carry the following trade brands too.
O'Heap & Son, Island Fire, East Fire UK, Protex, Northants Fire, Antifyre Ireland.

Thanks for the info - will circulate & keep my eyes open - no doubt some servicing companies will be oblivious.

This is unfortunate for Gloria, whose equipment has always been good quality, unlike some of the absolute rubbish knocking about these days, some of which isn't even fit for purpose.
In fact i'd be more worried if i'd been supplying tradex or commander stuff all over the place, these units having a serious design flaw which no-one will own up to.

Gloria are offering to reimburse suppliers of the affected units £6.50 following inspection and possible repair if required.Doesn't state "per unit" or "per site" but it isn't a great incentive to dash all the way to London to inspect one unit and pay the £8.00 congestion charge is it? Furthermore it does appear to be an urgent matter but the communication we have (dated 6th Feb) states that a supply of replacement handles will be shipped "shortly"....2 weeks later we're still waiting.
To change the subject slightly f500, can you give more info on the serious design flaw with some of these other units as we have just picked up a new customer who has been supplied with some of these by their previous service company (a BAFE approved company!) and we want to get them replaced...obviously want to give full details/proof rather than just saying that they're c***!

Great incentives they always offer, I remember a few years ago when they had problems with foam extinguisher hoses. I asked will you be sending me a stock of hoses to replace the cracking ones?.

"No, but if you purchase some stock from us when you send the faulty ones back (at your expense) we will credit back the cost of the new hose".

Great I thought, there faulty hose yet I have to foot the bill.

Dont use TG any more.
I refuse to have a battle of wittts with an unarmed person.

TFEM, the bottom levers are "perched" onto the bottom of the valve by such a tiny amount that they will just rip off from the valve if you pick up the extinguisher more than a couple of times which renders the extinguisher useless, this is worse on the heavier units.
We picked up a decent contract after the previous service company (BFC members, BAFE) supplied loads of this kit which was failing in the operators hands, (about 15 extinguishers failed which i have seen)
We are now replacing the whole lot with BS kitemarked equipment.
