BS 5839 -part 1: 2002 + A2:2008
« on: June 27, 2010, 09:57:24 AM »
I must write "in accordance with BS 5839 -part 1: 2002 + A2:2008" at least a dozen times a day.

I want to be technically correct but there must be a shorthand form that can be used.

Is it still ok to say "in accordance with BS 5839 -part 1: 2002" or should it be "in accordance with BS 5839 -part 1: 2008"

I note that the model certificates in the appendices of BS 5839 -part 1: 2002 + A2:2008 are still worded "BS 5839 -part 1: 2002"

So does that make it ok to just refer to the 2002 document?

There is no 2008 version. You can say BS 5839-1: 2002 (as amended).

Thanks Colin.
I suppose we should continue to accept, without comment, certificates for new installations that simply refer to BS 5839-1: 2002 as this is still compliant with the recommended format in BS5839-1: 2002 (as amended)?

I feel that it is important that any design/installation/commissioning confirms exactly what it refers to.

If you don't highlight the A2:2008 bit then there is no absolutely clear indication that the amendments have been considered.

Whilst the suffix 'as amended', along with the date of the certificate, might be considered as sufficient legally, why not make things crystal clear by confirming up to which amendment has been included?

Immediately after A3 comes out, would the term 'as amended' mean to A2 or to A3? Surely it wouldn't be crystal clear.

Prof., if necessary write out the full BS description followed by (hereinafter described as 'The BS') once, and then call it The BS thereafter in the same document

You could use Word's auto correct facility so that when you enter "BS5839 Pt1" the whole shooting caboodle is inserted automatically? You can use this to keep all your references to BSs up to date and correct.
