Colour of rising fire mains
« on: September 28, 2010, 11:11:58 AM »
Does a rising fire mains in a warehouse converted to flats need to be identified by colour in accordance with BS 1710:1984?
All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.

Thanks Mr. P I have said I cannot see any reasons why the pipework needs to be identify but the landing valves also inlet manifold should be painted signal red and signed with the appropriate sign.

It's good practice to identify pipework & flow to BS 1710:1984 & aids ongoing management of the building including maintenance and alterations/extensions.

Certain pipework marking is required for H&S and Water Board requirements (may also be a requirement under Building Regs as most new builds are marked up).

However from a fire point of view the primary concern is identifying the outlet and inlet points & for multiple installations identifying which areas an inlet supplies (e..g tower A dry riser, tower B wet riser tank, substructure dry falling main, etc)
