European equivlent standard for BS 476:p22
« on: November 25, 2010, 07:18:25 PM »
I have an enquiry from a guy currently working in Gibraltar and urgently need a 30 minute fire door installed.  He can't find one in Gibraltar so is hoping to source it in Spain.

He wants to know the relevant EN numbers that the doors should be tested/manufactured to that would comply with UK Building Regulations? ???

My understanding is BS EN 1634-1:2008 is the European equivalent of BS 476:P22 but he has been quoted the following standards UNE 23802:1979, EN 13501-2-2004 and EN 81-58 any ideas?
All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.

I'm afraid you are not going to like this, but they are either trying to sell old stock of doors or don't keep up with the times:

EN 13501-2-2004 - Fire classification of construction products and building elements - Part 2: Classification based on results of fire tests except for products for use in ventilation
Status: WITHDRAWN, so shouldn't be in use.

BS EN 81-58:2003. Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts. Examination and tests
Status: Yes it includes Fire Resistance Tests, but for Lift Doors only!

And the UNE is the old Spanish Standard that has been superseded by Euro Norms - a check of Spanish guidance states that it is now unlawful to use doors to this standard unless they have also been tested to EN 1634-1 and CE marked.

The EN13501 document is the current classification document against which fire resisting elements are to be classified - nip down the library and take a look!

The lift landing door standard is irrelevant unless it's a lift landing door that your man wants.

I'm no expert on Spanish Standards, but the UNE standard being quoted may well be in the same position as the BS (although I don't think so).

As it's Gib. there is a history of them working to England and Wales Regs (albeit about 20 years behind).   I would have thought that (a) if the Spanish want to enhance their reputation in Gib. they'd be happy to supply an EN1634-1 tested door, or if the client is super-pro British, they'd be prepared to get a nice English door shipped out!
