Wet Riser
« on: December 16, 2010, 11:46:52 AM »
Traditional high rise block of flats 60mtrs high has had the temporary dry riser conversion (which was done due to cost of repairs approx 20 yrs ago) fully refurbished and reinstated as a wet riser system including new remote pumphouse.
As the pumphouse is remote and the electrical supply is not fed via the block and is therefore unlikely to be effected by a fire within the block - does the pump house require a back up electrical supply for the pumps?????

Its not about the supply being taken out by fire, there could be a general mains failure / power cut.

The current british standard says that where both pumps are electrically driven they should either be
separately driven by independent supplies or if driven from the same supply with an automatic changeover to a completely independent secondary supply in the event of failure of the primary supply.

I fully concur with what MF has said but you need to check out BS 9990:2006 Code of practice for non-automatic fire-fighting systems in buildings there is quite a chunk on Electrical supplies.
All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.

Sorry I dont have anything to contribute but am curious abot the source of the water in a new pumped installation- are you pumping direct from the Towns mains and if so did you have any trouble in getting approval to do this?

The town water mains feeds large braithwait? tanks approx 20ftx40ft x8ft. The tanks also have an inlet which can be used by fire service to fill tanks up if the need ever arose. Hope this answers.
