Interesting Davo.
Looking at the website I wonder where the requirement for all extinguisher Technicians to be FETA trained originated? Perhaps they havn't heard of BAFE and the FIA. Take a look at the sample log book and the guidance it contains- for example the guidance on the testing and maintenance of emergency lighting.

I wonder if push came to shove whether  their enforcement team would take action against an RP who was following the guidance in the NFRS logbook?

Prof

Reading the home page, I read that these are ex-Brigade staff, so why the tie-in ???

What would worry me is whether the individuals stick to what they know or if they have taken their studies further as would be expected of a reputable company?

Looking at the online or cd based  fire safety awareness course one advantage it claims is protection for the RP against prosecution. And yet its clearly a one size fits all course. I wonder if a one size fits all course can be considered to conform to Article 21 (2).?

They are not employing exclusively ex firefighters as if you look at the fire alarms installation and maintenance services they are offering they state their staff are qualified electricians. Again the enforcement implications are interesting.

The recent change in the Law empowering Fire and Rescue Services to engage in such activities will result in a crop of new arms length companies such as these. As it develops it will be interesting to see what firewalls are in place  between commercial operations and enforcement.

I suppose the other question what is the definition of an arms length company? Is for example the arms length company being charged for the links and content on FRS website? Could other companies also apply to be listed on the FRS website? Would they be charged the same?

If FRS are now going to service fire alarm systems on a commercial basis, I think it is only fair that the local council taxpayers should now pay me to go around looking at how well these fire alarm systems have been serviced, and issuing enforcement notices where necessary!

Heres an idea- why dont the fire services market the services of their control rooms as alarm call handling centres. That way they would cut out the middleman and be perfectly placed to make the judgement on whether to turn out or not thus taking ultimate control of unwanted signals.
