5839/EN54
« on: August 28, 2013, 04:00:00 PM »
Hi

I've been asked a question that goes something along the lines of

"Are your Fire Alarm Systems maintained and serviced correctly to EN54?"

isn't the servicing and maintenance to 5839? EN54 is the European compliance standard for the component parts...er isn't it?

I believe you are correct,

The EN 54 Fire detection and fire alarm systems is a mandatory standard that specifies requirements and laboratory test for every component of fire detection and fire alarm system and it allows the free movement of construction products between countries of the European Union market.

It was developed and approved by European Committee for Standardization (CEN).

BS 5839 Fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings, Code of practice for the design, installation and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems.
All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.

EN54 Part 14 deals with maintenance and servicing but as far as I can see from the internet its been batted around the system for a few years and has now been shelved. There are some drafts out there but its not really clear what's happening to the standard in the long term.
