I have heard some shocking admissions and statements from people who run nurseries with regards to the importance they place on fire safety.

My own daughters nursery is however tip top and equipped with the latest wire free fire door retainers.

As a thought, do you class a nursery as a sleeping risk premise?

Yes and no. Nurseries are not considered as sleeping accommodation in the same way that certain offices at Fireco House might be.

Children sleep there but the children are in any case completely dependent on the staff for their safe evacuation from fire if necessary. So the fire precautions and evacuation strategy have to reflect this- considering containment, compartmentation and means of escape all of which will depend on the layout of the nursery, staffing levels (as dictated by other legislation) height, travel distances etc.

When talking about nurseries, are we talking about accommodation for under 3-year olds or 'pre-school' groups 3 years and older, which used to be referred to as 'nurseries'?

Interestingly, the pre-school group that uses my local church centre specifically asked to be shown the FA system controls so that they can hold drills twice a term without needing me there!
