I note that the above is coming into effect later this year. However, I can't find anywhere in the legislation which identifies the type of smoke alarm which is appropriate for installation in rented properties.

Is it likely that a 10 year battery smoke alarm will be adequate or should mains detectors be used?

Also, I note that the Regulations do not apply to social housing. Do you think, policy wise, it would be advisable for social housing providers to aim to meet this standard where practical anyway - after this is a life safety measure?

Based on the average price per smoke alarm (?3-?4) cited in the Regulatory Impact Assessment that accompanies the draft legislation a Grade F (PP9 battery only, single station) will comply and no minimum specification is therefore included.

Yes that's about it. All fire authorities have been given smoke and CO alarms by central government to give away free of charge. One private landlord at one event walked away with 42.
