Having been persuaded by LFB, BS7671 now requires consumer units to be made from non-combustible material. This is applicable to domestic and similar premises and has effect from 2016. I appreciate that we did discuss this before. However, I would, as an inspector of electrical installations, like to gauge your opinion on the tack that might be taken in a FRA. Similar premises might be HMOs, nursing homes etc. The IET have indicated that no code need be issued during an electrical inspection where a plastic consumer unit has been found. The whole point of a code is to indicate a defect or non compliance with the regulations that might give rise to danger. This is a strange position for the IET to adopt as they were very vocal about the safety implications of using consumer units that were combustible!
