I am really interested in joining the fire service, but i am a little worried about getting in, due to having a criminal conviction. In late 2001 i got into a scrap outside a Restaurant and a window ended up being broken. I took responsibility of it and found myself arrested for Criminal Damage and put through the courts. I said it was my fault in interview, so i was guilty in a sense. They gave me a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered me to pay £1000 compensation.
My lawyer at the time said i should have kept my mouth shut when i was arrested as i would have never been found guilty if i didnt admit my part. I was worried at the time as thought i'd get thrown out of university, so i tried to be as helpful with the police as i could, but honesty seemed to have landed me right in it.
If i put in an application to the fire service now, would i have to declare it on the application or is it now a spent conviction?
I'd be gutted if i cant have a career in the fire service just because of a drunken fight one night as a student.
Any advice would be most Appreciated
