Spark Arresors for Chimeys
« on: February 25, 2004, 09:59:38 PM »
I have recently attended a fire in the roof of and old timber framed building, not thatched but originally probably was. The only cause that I can come up with is that a spark from the chimney has settled into the gap between the bargeboard and the roof tiles, this is possibly the third fire in the roof at this property (got to check reports).

Amongst the advice that I have given the tenant is to fit a spark arrestor to the chimney, but having now looked on the Internet there appears to be contradictory advice, as to their benefit. Has anybody any experience or favoured brand

People do complain about spark arrestors, but, generally, insurers like to see them fitted in thatched properties with open fires. I normally ask for them.
