The Roll of the Fire Fighter.
« on: September 14, 2006, 07:09:01 PM »
All Fire Fighters do an excellent job,the roll is a changing one and we dont all like change,it is sad the way some are being treated. There are cuts in services, none replacement of Appliances or Staff making it harder to carry out the roll.I hope the Fire Fighters on Merseyside can solve there dispute soon as it is now starting to split colleagues.

I hope they can reach an agreement as well, i think they were left with the only option as they have been treated very badly. 'Modernisation' has only taken the fire service back in time in my opinion. IRMP+IPDS and rank to role have been a real let down. Morale in most LAFBs is at an all time low.

It wont be long before we go back to the days of looking at peoples insurance to see if they are covered before providing any kind of service!

Here, here.  My watches strength taken down from 13 to 10.  Calls on the increase, great this modernisation thing - still the best job in the world though!!
I am sorry if I offend anybody although if gold medals were dished out for it I would have quite a few!!

Is it?  What about the guy who's job is it to taste Guiness? Or the guy who oils the catwalk models?  ;)

Yes the role of the firefighter is changing but to a great extent it has always been a mobile role reflecting then hazards facing society, afterall the victorian firefighter had no RTAs.

I still believe that the main role of the Fire Service is to get people etc. out of the physical danger they have got themselves into, and part of this must be to try to stop them getting into the danger in the first place. However I get the feeling that the political masters have never quite grasped this and if it doesn't look like a business then it must be changed to look like one.

Yes it is a great job but I look at the job now and compare it to the job I joined and I wonder which was best. But then again nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

When you have been in a job for many years nostalgia is sometimes good, but does it fit in with todays world?

Yes it does ...... you can look at how things are now and then reflect back to how it used to be.

Some changes are for the better while some are not, that's why nostalgia is a good thing.

The trick is to recognise the good changes and reject the bad. The trap is to think that everything we used to do is the best way of doing it, or conversely it is out of date and therefore bad.
