Defence fire service fitness tests (urgent advice)
« on: May 22, 2007, 01:36:34 PM »
Hi all,

I was informed yesterday that I have passed through to the physical tests for the Defence fire service.  The tests are in two weeks time.

Unfortunately, I broke a finger four weeks ago and have just come out of plaster. This presents me with two problems, 1. the finger itself is hindering my grip at present, as it has not completeley healed and 2. I was only able to undertake minimum training during my four weeks in plaster.

Before I go ahead and call the officer in charge of selection, I would like to know if anyone has any idea what is the likely outcome for me, i.e. will they say 'tough luck, come back next year', or are they likely to make allowances?!

A prompt response would be much appreciated (preferrably from someone within the defence service).

Thanks.

I would say that you dont need to tell them, if your upto the test then go for it. the new national physical tests arn't that demanding anyhow. I did one a while back when they were testing them and passed no problem, I don't think im as fit as I used to be.

If your saying that the finger is realy still bad and doing the tests might cause you lasting injury I'd let them know and see what they say. The likely response wouyld be: re-apply next time.

What the heck! You have 2 weeks... give your pinky some tlc, flexing exercises without going ott.  You'll probably roll out some hose and carry & lift a bit. Simulate some stuff like that keeping your finger out the way if it's that bad.  Cannot see you'll lose anything by going for it. Common sense prevailing...

Hi, It would be a help if you could tell me where you are applying for as in station. I was MOD at a Yank base until going LA wholetime. When I undertook my physical tests it was easy and not to physical at all stations used to do there own thing. I say don't worry about it and go for it if you want it that bad. Good Luck.

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice (particulary Pete and Mr. P). I went along to physical tests in the end at RAF Manston, Kent. I got a letter through today confirming that I passed the tests and am through to the interview stage of selection.

As yet, I have not been given a date; does anyone know how long it should take to receive a date for interview?

Also, any advice as to how I can prepare fully for this stage of selction?

Well done!

I would have thought the interviews would be a few weeks later. The interview will be 'PQA' style, basicly they question you on the new Firefighter PQAs. Exacly the same as the application form. You can find these PQAs on most fire service websites.

They are a bit meaningless and of no relevance to the job you will do but you just have to go along with it. If you passed the application form then you should know the kind of thing they want.

Good Luck if you get in its a better job than local authority.
